Do I Need Oral Surgery?

Oral surgery may sound intimidating, but there have been many advancements in dentistry that have revolutionized dental procedures! Wondering if you need oral surgery? We’ll break down the most common types and what often leads to needing one!

What Is Oral Surgery?

Oral surgery is any surgical procedure done to the mouth or jaw. Some of the most common oral surgery procedures include:

  • Bone Grafts

  • Dental Implant Placement

  • Root Canal Therapy

  • Wisdom Teeth Removal

Bone Grafts

Bone grafts are utilized to restore jawbone health. Oftentimes, patients with missing teeth will require a bone graft down the road. Teeth stimulate the jawbone and keep it healthy. When teeth are missing for an extended period of time, the jawbone begins to weaken and deteriorate. Bone grafts are designed to strengthen and repair the jawbone.

Dental Implant Placement

If you’re missing teeth, dental implants could be a great solution for you. Dental implants are biocompatible replacement tooth roots that are surgically placed into the jawbone. Once they’ve healed, dentists use the dental implants to securely attach replacement teeth (crowns, bridges, and dentures).

Root Canal Therapy

If your tooth is severely decayed or damaged, root canal therapy may be necessary in order to save your natural tooth. During a root canal procedure, dentists will clean out the infected pulp from inside the tooth and fill it with a material to help prevent future infection.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth can be extremely troublesome for oral health. They can be impacted, erupt sideways, or grow directly into existing teeth. If wisdom teeth are impacted (stuck beneath the gums), oral surgery is necessary to remove them.
