Which Foods to Avoid After Teeth Whitening

At Gary Johnson DDS Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we love seeing how patients totally light up after they’ve received teeth whitening treatment. It’s amazing how boosting teeth a few shades whiter can not only transform a person’s appearance but also their self-confidence. If you’ve just had your teeth whitened, we’re going to make an educated guess and say that you want those results to last you as long as possible. One thing you can do is steer clear of these foods, which are known to stain teeth.

Dark Beverages

There’s coffee breath and there are those coffee tooth stains. Dark beverages like coffee, tea, and red wine can wind up leaving some discoloration on your teeth. You don’t have to cut them out of your life completely but rotate in some water a good amount of the time or rinse your mouth with water while drinking them.

Tomato-Based Products

Not only are tomatoes bright in color but they’re also acidic. That means that products with tomatoes in them can be more likely to stain your teeth. We’re talking about things like ketchup, tomato-based pasta sauce, tomato juice, etc.

Other Dark Condiments

Speaking of dark foods and other condiments infamous for leaving stains, you should also watch out with soy sauce and balsamic vinegar. As delicious as both of them may be, they can also knock down the brightness of your teeth.

White Shirt Test

One general rule of thumb is to keep the white shirt test in mind. If there’s something that would stain your white t-shirt, then it’s something that could stain your teeth, so you’ll want to be careful with it. You don’t want a mess on your clothes nor on your smile!
