Does Sedation Help with Dental Anxiety?

For some patients, dental anxiety is a concern that often prevents dental visits or dental work. When dental anxiety is this severe, it becomes a problem as your dental health affects the well-being of your teeth and gums and overall wellness. Fortunately, sedation dentistry is an option to help you feel comfortable and relaxed during dental procedures.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the use of administering sedatives to help patients relax. The process of sedation allows Dr. Johnson and our team to provide dental treatments safely and comfortably for patients with dental anxiety.

There are several types of sedation, which include nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation. If you would like to learn about the type of sedation we offer, give our office a call.

Dental Sedation Process

If you need or request sedation dentistry, a thorough discussion and evaluation will need to be completed. During this evaluation, your treatment, health, and extent of anxiety will be taken into consideration.

If you’re receiving sedation, you will typically be sedated before the procedure. During the procedure, you will be monitored to make sure the sedatives are working and not causing any adverse effects. After the procedure, you may need someone to take you home unless you opt for nitrous oxide, as the effects of sedation may last several hours after the procedure.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry can make dental visits less intimidating and more comfortable. Other benefits of sedation include:

  • Ease of dental procedures

  • No sense of smell or sound

  • Receiving necessary dental care
