How Does Pregnancy Affect Oral Health?

Pregnancy is a time when a woman’s body is going through many different changes, and you may not have suspected it, but this also includes changes in oral health. Like what exactly? Let’s dive in…

Risk of Gingivitis

Gingivitis is so common during pregnancy that it’s actually often referred to simply as “pregnancy gingivitis.” When you’re pregnant, your hormone levels are changing and your progesterone and estrogen can end up being significantly higher than normal. This, in turn, makes it easier for gingivitis to develop because your gums and immune system are reacting to bacteria in a different way.

To keep your mouth safe from gingivitis, make sure you’re brushing and flossing every day. Use a toothbrush with soft bristles so you don’t irritate your gums. For an extra bit of precaution, rinse with an antimicrobial mouthwash, too. You should also remember to visit your dentist for your regular check-ups so they can keep an eye on the condition of your gums. If they notice anything wrong, they’ll be able to handle it quickly so it doesn’t get worse.

Damage From Morning Sickness

Some women are lucky to go through a whole pregnancy without experiencing morning sickness, but others are not so fortunate. When you throw up, that stomach acid in your mouth can actually erode your teeth’s enamel. The problem is, enamel can never grow back. To prevent enamel erosion due to morning sickness, make it a habit to rinse your mouth out with water anytime after you’ve vomited. You can also rinse with a mixture of 1 cup of water and 1 teaspoon baking soda.
