Have you thought about your gum health lately? Well, February is Gum Disease Awareness Month, so now’s the time! Read on to learn more about gum disease, how you can spot it and prevent it.
All About Gum Disease
Also known as gingivitis, gum disease gradually affects your gums, leading to the potential for some awful effects. It’s caused by bacteria-laden plaque that builds up on your teeth and under your gums. Gum disease symptoms include: red, swollen, and even bleeding gums; bad breath; receding gums; tooth sensitivity; and even loose teeth.
Effects of Untreated Gum Disease
Gum disease is not something you want to ignore. Gum disease in its early stages is known as gingivitis but can progress to periodontal disease if steps aren’t taken to treat the disease. As the issue worsens, the gums will pull away from the teeth, welcoming in bad bacteria. Severe gum disease has been linked to tooth loss, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and rheumatoid arthritis.
Preventing of Gum Disease
Knowing all of that, you probably want to know what causes gum disease and how you can avoid it. Luckily, there are steps you can take to protect your smile against this serious issue. Above all, care is so important. That means brushing your teeth at least twice daily, flossing every day, eating a healthy diet low in processed sugars and starches, and visiting the dentist for your routine cleanings and exams. Additionally, we recommend incorporating fluoride into your routine, drinking lots of water, and quitting smoking.
