Are Fillings Harmful to Overall Health?

When you have a cavity, you are in the very beginning stages of developing a tooth infection, which can lead to tooth loss if further neglected. Fillings are designed to fill the hole a cavity leaves behind after your dentist clears the tooth of infection, saving the tooth from further harm in that area.

Over the years, there have been many materials used in tooth fillings, including some that have since been proven to have negative effects on patients’ overall health.  Let’s take a look at what some of those materials are, as well as how we provide safe dental fillings at Gary Johnson DDS Family & Cosmetic Dentistry.

What Are Amalgam Fillings?

Amalgam fillings, sometimes called silver fillings because of their color, are only composed of a small amount of silver. Made from a mixture of mercury, silver, copper, tin, and zinc, amalgam fillings have a metallic appearance on the tooth and do not blend into the appearance of the tooth.

Because of the mercury content in amalgam fillings, patients and providers may be exposed to mercury vapors during the filling treatment. Prolonged mercury exposure can cause major health issues down the line, so those with multiple amalgam fillings can be at increased risk for health issues, especially women who are or may become pregnant, nursing mothers, children under the age of 6, and those with known neurological or kidney issues.

Why Composite Fillings Are Better Than Amalgam Fillings

At Gary Johnson DDS Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we offer composite fillings made from tooth-like ceramic and plastic compounds for a safer and more discreet option. Unlike amalgam fillings, our composite fillings are made to match the look of your natural tooth and are safe for children. While composite fillings are typically less pricey than amalgam fillings, they provide both the look and safety any patient would want in a dental treatment.
