5 Smile-Friendly Snacks for Kids
Snacking gets such a bad rap, but kids really need snacks throughout the day to help them sustain their energy levels. So many processed foods and snacks on the market are not only just sugar rushes for kids, but they can even be harmful to their teeth. Here are five healthy and smile-friendly snacks you can feed your kids!
1. Plain Yogurt
Forgo yogurt with added sugars, flavoring, or even sugary granola added. Go for plain yogurt, even a Greek yogurt, and make it special by adding a bit of honey or fresh fruit. The calcium in the yogurt strengthens teeth, and the protein in the yogurt will keep your kids’ appetites at bay.
2. Hummus & Pita Bread
Whole grains with low sugar can prevent the type of acid attacks often caused by many processed foods. Not only will your kids love the breadiness of the pita, but it isn’t unhealthy like white bread. Hummus is a healthier alternative to sugary jams, too.
3. Cubes of Cheese
Who doesn’t love cheese? Cheese can actually protect your teeth by lowering the pH in your mouth, preventing tooth decay and cavities. These snacks are easy to carry around, too!
4. Hard Boiled Eggs
Add a little salt to this afternoon snack and your kids will stay full until dinner! The calcium in eggs will strengthen enamel and also help build bones.
5. Crunchy Vegetables
This is a no-brainer, but crunchy vegetables like celery and carrots are full of calcium and phosphates. These help your kids’ teeth rebuild minerals that are damaged by acids in their mouths. Vegetables are also part of an overall healthy diet!
Bonus “Snack”: Plain Water
You may not think of a drink as a snack. We mention water, though, because so many parents give their kids sugary juices that will lead to cavities and tooth decay. Rather than giving your kids juice, feed them whole fruits and vegetables. Stick with just plain water or milk when your kids are thirsty.
