How to Teach Your Kids to Enjoy Flossing

Chances are good that your child may not love flossing. But don’t worry if your child doesn’t seem enthused when it’s time to floss, because we’re sharing some great ways to teach your kids to enjoy flossing.

Personalize Their Tools

One way to get your kids more excited about flossing is by purchasing flossing tools that will make them more willing to tackle the oral habit. There are a number of products that are designed specifically for kids to help them floss. There is the traditional string floss that is made in flavors kids will enjoy like bubblegum. Then there are the floss picks--the pieces of plastic that hold a single length of floss--that come in fun, vibrant colors and are shaped like sea creatures. These floss picks are even sometimes branded with your child’s favorite cartoon characters. There are also water picks--tools that use water pressure to remove food particles and plaque between the teeth--that are specially designed for kids and come in fun colors and with stickers. Let your child pick their flossing tools and they’ll feel even more responsibility and independence when it comes to flossing.

Make Flossing a Family Affair

One of the best ways to ensure that your kids are interested in flossing is by making it a family affair. Join your child for their morning and nighttime oral health routine so that you can set a good example for them. The more they see you flossing, the more inclined they will be to floss. Better yet, flossing together makes your child feel more connected to you and to the act of flossing. They’ll be more interested in flossing if the whole family is flossing together than if you’re just telling them what to do.

Make Flossing Time, Party Time

And while you’re all flossing together, why not have a little fun? Flossing doesn’t need to be boring! Try playing games with your child while they floss, like who can floss their teeth quickest--while still maintaining good form, of course. There are also a large number of videos online that are made specifically for kids to watch while they’re taking care of their oral health. You could also read them their favorite story while they floss, play their favorite song, make up a special song for flossing time, or crank up the music and have a mini dance party while they’re flossing. No matter what you do, it’s important to make sure that your child is having fun while they’re flossing.

Positive Reinforcement

Positive reinforcement can be a powerful motivator for your child. From promising extra playtime to creating a sticker chart, there are a number of ways you can get your child excited about flossing. Just be sure not to promise them candy or other sweet treats that are bad for their teeth!
